What makes van storage secure rather than just tidy?
Fixing to the vehicle structure, not just to the floor covering. A heavy steel box that is bolted through to a load-bearing point resists removal; one sitting loose in the load area does not.
Look for anti-jemmy lid returns, protected hinges and a shrouded high-security lock, the same as any site box.
Does it affect my vehicle insurance?
It often helps, and some insurers require secure storage as a condition of tool cover in a van. Overnight tool theft from vans is common enough that policies frequently exclude it otherwise.
Check the policy wording, since some specify a standard or require the vehicle to be alarmed as well.
How does it affect payload?
Steel storage is heavy and comes straight off your payload allowance. On smaller vans a large steel box plus tools can consume a meaningful fraction of the available weight.

Are there alternatives to a fixed box?
