How accurate are digital flow meters?

Typical accuracy for turbine and oval-gear meters used in fuel dispensing is around ±0.5% to ±1%, which is fine for stock control, usage monitoring and internal recharging.

If fuel is being sold or the measurement is used in a trade transaction, a meter with the appropriate legal-for-trade approval is required, which is a different and more tightly regulated category.

Digital or mechanical — which should I choose?

Digital meters give a batch total and a resettable trip counter, are easier to read, and are generally more accurate at low flow rates. Mechanical meters need no power, cannot fail electronically, and are extremely durable.

For a fixed dispensing point where usage is tracked, digital is usually worth it. For occasional bulk transfer, mechanical is simpler and cheaper.

Does the meter need calibrating?

Meters are factory-calibrated but drift over time and with wear, particularly if fuel is dirty or contains water. Annual verification against a known volume is good practice, and most digital meters allow field recalibration.

If a meter is used for recharging between departments or customers, calibration records matter.

Will it work with AdBlue?

Only if it is specified for AdBlue. Standard fuel meters use brass and aluminium internals that corrode in urea solution.

AdBlue meters use stainless steel and compatible polymers. As with all DEF equipment, it must be kept separate from fuel equipment.

Where should the meter be fitted?

Downstream of the pump and filter, as close to the dispensing point as practical, with a straight run of pipe before and after it as specified by the manufacturer. Turbulence upstream reduces accuracy.

Fitting a meter immediately after a bend or valve is a common cause of readings that never quite reconcile.

Can flow meters detect a leak?

Indirectly, and it is one of their more useful roles. Reconciling metered dispensing against tank level over time reveals discrepancies that indicate either a leak or unauthorised drawing.

Neither figure alone tells you much; the comparison between them is where the value lies.
