What an installation involves

- 02 Site surveyAccess, separation distances, base condition and where the tank can sit.
- 03 Tank selectionSize and type based on household size, usage and available space.
- 04 Base and site preparationA level, fire-resistant base laid to OFTEC requirements where needed.
- 05 Old tank removalSafely disconnected, drained and taken away for recycling.
- 06 Install, test and certifyNew tank connected, system tested and the installation signed off.
Included Free scrap collection on replacements. The old tank is removed and responsibly recycled.
Why replace
Signs it is time for a new tank
- It is 15 to 20 years oldThat is the typical working life, depending on material and maintenance.
- Corrosion, bulging or stainingRust on steel, splitting or distortion on plastic, or oil smell around the base.

OFTEC guidelines
Where the tank can go
OFTEC sets the separation distances and base requirements for domestic oil tanks. Check these against your site before you enquire — it is the quickest way to know whether your preferred position will work.
Minimum separation
- 1.8m From non-fire-rated eaves of a building
- 1.8m From a non-fire-rated building or structure, such as a garden shed
- 1.8m From openings in a fire-rated building, such as doors and windows
- 1.8m From liquid fuel appliance flue terminals
- 760mm From a non-fire-rated boundary, such as a wooden fence
- 600mm From screening that does not form part of the boundary, such as trellis or foliage
Base requirements
- Level, non-combustible and imperforate
- Concrete at least 100mm thick, or paving or stonework at least 50mm
- Strong enough for the tank when full
- Extending 300mm beyond all sides of the tank
Where the separation distances cannot be met, a fire protection barrier with a minimum 30 minute fire rating allows the tank to sit 300mm from other buildings and structures. Where access is needed, such as the fill point, allow 600mm.
A site-specific risk assessment remains the responsibility of the competent person installing the tank, or the building inspector certifying the installation.
