What makes an IBC pump kit different from a tank kit?

The suction arrangement. IBC kits include the correct bung adaptor for the container thread, and either a dip tube sized to reach the base or a connection to the IBC outlet valve.

Getting the adaptor wrong is the usual frustration — IBC threads vary between manufacturers, so check the thread type before ordering.

Can the same kit be used on drums and IBCs?

Often, with the right adaptors. A 205 litre drum has a 2" BSP bung; IBCs typically have a 2" coarse thread cap and a separate outlet valve. Many kits ship with both adaptors.

Dip tube length differs though — a drum tube will not reach the base of an IBC, leaving usable product behind.

Should I draw from the top or the outlet valve?

Top draw via a dip tube avoids relying on the outlet valve and keeps the container sealed at the base, which is safer if the IBC is moved. Outlet-valve connection is quicker and needs no priming.

For fuels and chemicals stored outdoors, top draw is usually preferable because a leaking outlet valve empties the whole container.

Are these kits suitable for AdBlue?

Only if specified for it. AdBlue needs stainless steel and compatible polymers throughout — pump, dip tube, hose and nozzle — and must never share equipment with fuel.

AdBlue IBC kits are a common and sensible purchase, since IBCs are the usual bulk format for DEF at smaller sites.

How do I stop the last of the contents being wasted?

Use a dip tube that reaches close to the base, and where possible tilt the IBC slightly toward the draw point. Some kits include a foot valve that maintains prime as the level drops.

Bear in mind that the last few litres in any container hold the most sediment, so drawing absolutely everything is not always desirable.

Do IBCs need to be bunded?

If they hold oil or hazardous substances and a release could reach drains or ground, yes. A 1,000 litre IBC needs 1,100 litres of containment under the 110% rule.

IBC bunds with integral dispensing platforms are worth specifying where decanting is frequent.
