Choosing the right Hose Reels

What are the benefits of a reel over a loose hose?
Hose life, mainly. A hose dragged across the ground and driven over fails at the fittings within a fraction of the life it would have on a reel. Reels also remove a significant trip hazard and keep the nozzle off contaminated ground.
On a busy fuel point the payback is usually measured in months rather than years.
Manual, spring retractable or motorised?
Manual rewind is cheapest and suits occasional use. Spring retractable is the usual choice for daily dispensing — it pulls the hose back automatically and keeps it tidy. Motorised suits long, heavy hoses where spring return would be impractical.
Spring retractable reels need a latching mechanism that holds at intermediate lengths, or the hose retracts every time it is released.
What hose length should I choose?
Long enough to reach the furthest realistic filling position, plus a little slack. Excessive length is not free — it increases pressure drop, adds weight, and holds more fuel that drains back or drips.
Six to ten metres covers most fixed dispensing points; longer runs are usually better solved by relocating the reel.
Do reels need to be enclosed?
Not necessarily, but an enclosed or covered reel keeps the hose out of sunlight and weather, which extends hose life considerably. Open reels are fine indoors or under cover.
In coastal or heavily salted environments, a coated or stainless reel avoids corrosion at the swivel and bearings.
Can the same reel be used for fuel and AdBlue?
No. As with all AdBlue equipment, the reel, swivel and hose must be dedicated and made from compatible materials. Fuel residue contaminates AdBlue and AdBlue corrodes fuel-rated components.
Colour-coding or clearly labelling reels prevents the wrong one being used, which is an easy mistake on a mixed dispensing point.
What maintenance do reels need?
Check the swivel seal for weeping, the spring mechanism for smooth operation, and the hose for cracking, kinking and damage at the fittings. Lubricate the swivel on the manufacturer's schedule.
The swivel is the usual failure point and a weeping swivel drips continuously, which is both a loss and a contamination issue.
