12V Pump Kits FAQs
What is a 12V pump kit used for?
Dispensing diesel where there is no mains supply — from a vehicle-mounted tank, a site bowser, an IBC or a remote storage tank. The pump runs from a vehicle battery or a leisure battery.
It is the standard solution for mobile refuelling of plant on site.
What flow rate can I expect?
Most 12V diesel pumps deliver between 35 and 60 litres per minute at the pump outlet. Actual flow at the nozzle is lower once hose length, bore and filtration are accounted for.
For filling plant and machinery this is generally adequate. For high-volume transfer between tanks, a mains or engine-driven pump is a better fit.
Will it drain the vehicle battery?
A 12V pump typically draws in the region of 15 to 25 amps under load, so extended running with the engine off will discharge a battery. For frequent or prolonged use, run the engine or fit a dedicated leisure battery.
Cable size matters too — undersized cable causes voltage drop, poor flow and overheating.
Is it self-priming?
Most 12V vane pumps are self-priming within their rated suction lift, commonly around two to three metres. Beyond that they struggle to draw and can run dry.
Mount the pump as close to the fuel level as practical, and fit a foot valve on the suction line if the pump sits above the tank.
Can I use it for petrol?
No, unless the pump is explicitly ATEX-rated for petrol. Standard diesel transfer pumps are not spark-protected and present a genuine ignition risk with Class 1 flammable liquids.
The same applies to AdBlue, which requires dedicated stainless and polymer components.
What is included in a typical kit?
Pump, delivery hose, nozzle, suction hose or telescopic suction pipe, and the fittings to connect them. Better kits add a filter and a flow meter.
Check whether the nozzle supplied is manual or automatic — for filling vehicle tanks an automatic nozzle is worth specifying.
