What should I look for in a site box?
Heavy-gauge steel, welded rather than riveted seams, anti-jemmy lid returns, internal or shrouded hinges, and a lock housed in a protected shroud. Weight itself is a deterrent.
Look for forklift pockets and lifting eyes if the box will be moved, and check the empty weight against how it will be handled.
Should site boxes be fixed down?
Wherever the site allows it, yes. Most site thefts involve removing the whole box rather than defeating the lock, so a heavy box that can still be craned or dragged onto a flatbed is vulnerable.
Ground anchors, chaining to a fixed structure, or bolting through the base all help substantially.
What lock type is best?
A five-lever deadlock or a high-security closed-shackle padlock in a protected shroud. Open-shackle padlocks and cam locks are cut or levered in seconds.
Check whether your insurer specifies a rating or standard — some policies are explicit about lock specification for tool cover.
Are they weatherproof?
Better boxes have gasketed lids and drainage to prevent water sitting inside, but very few are fully watertight. Tools stored long-term in a site box in winter will suffer condensation.
Adding a desiccant and keeping a small vent path reduces corrosion on stored tooling.
Can they be used to store fuel or chemicals?
No, unless the box is specifically designed for hazardous goods with a sumped base and appropriate rating. A standard site box gives no containment and no fire protection.
For fuel cans and chemicals, use a purpose-built hazardous storage box that contains leaks and is marked accordingly.
What size should I buy?
Size to the largest item that must fit, then allow for the fact that boxes fill faster than expected. Two medium boxes are often more practical than one large one, since they can be positioned near different work areas.
Consider handling too — a large box loaded with tools quickly becomes a lifting operation rather than a two-person move.
