When is a walk-in store better than cabinets?
When the volume stored exceeds what cabinets can hold sensibly, when items are bulky, or when people need to work inside the store rather than just retrieve from it.
Walk-in stores also allow proper segregation — separate areas or bunded zones within one secure envelope — which is difficult to achieve with individual cabinets.
What security features should I look for?
Heavy-gauge construction, anti-jemmy door returns, concealed or protected hinges, a high-specification locking system, and provision for fixing the store to a base.
For high-value contents, look for units tested to a recognised attack standard, and check whether your insurer specifies one.
Do hazardous stores need ventilation?
Yes, where flammable or volatile substances are stored. Natural high and low level ventilation provides cross-flow that prevents vapour accumulating to hazardous concentrations.
The ventilation must be permanent and unobstructed — vents blocked by stacked stock are a common finding and defeat the design entirely.
Does the store need a bunded floor?
For oils, fuels and liquid chemicals, yes. A sumped or bunded floor contains leaks and spills within the store rather than allowing them to run out under the door.
Capacity should meet the usual 110% of the largest container or 25% of total volume, whichever is greater.
Where should a walk-in store be sited?
On firm level ground with vehicle access for stocking, away from occupied buildings, boundaries and drains. Separation distances depend on the contents and quantities.
Position also needs to consider escape routes — a hazardous store should not sit alongside the route people would use to leave the building in a fire.
Can walk-in stores be relocated?
Many are designed for lifting by forklift or crane, and some are collapsible for transport, which suits sites that move. Check lifting points and the empty weight before assuming.
Relocatable units are worth specifying on construction sites even at slightly higher cost, since they can move to the next project.
