Choosing the right Point Of Use Water Heaters

Point of use water heaters are ideal for the immediate production of hot water. The water is heated near the sink or area where the water is required instead of from the central heating system. These units are also called over sink water heaters or under sink water heaters.

These small units can quick and easily be installed anywhere with a water and power supply available making them ideal for small wash rooms where connection to a centralised system is not practical.

Ergonomically designed for easy operation, giving unlimited amounts of hot water for hand washing.

What is a point of use water heater?

A compact electric heater installed at or near the outlet it serves, rather than centrally. It removes long pipe runs and the wait for hot water to arrive.

They suit remote washrooms, site cabins, kitchenettes and any outlet a long way from the main hot water source.

Stored or instantaneous — which should I choose?

Stored units hold a small volume, typically 5 to 15 litres, and give a modest amount of hot water at a good flow rate. Instantaneous units heat on demand with no storage but need a much higher electrical supply.

For handwashing, a small stored unit is usually the better fit. Instantaneous suits showers where continuous flow matters.

What electrical supply is needed?

Small stored heaters commonly run from a standard 13A supply. Instantaneous heaters draw considerably more — often 7kW to 10kW or higher — and need a dedicated circuit and appropriate cabling.

The electrical supply is usually the deciding constraint, particularly in older buildings and temporary accommodation.

Vented or unvented?

Small point-of-use heaters are commonly vented (open outlet), where a dedicated tap allows expansion, and are simple to install. Unvented versions serve multiple outlets but require the associated safety devices.

Vented units must be used with the specific tap supplied or specified — fitting a standard tap defeats the expansion arrangement.

Where can they be installed?

Undersink, oversink or wall-mounted depending on the model. Oversink units feed a dedicated tap directly; undersink units sit in the cupboard and feed existing taps.

Check the clearance and the fixing surface — a full 15 litre unit is heavier than it looks and needs proper mounting into a solid substrate.

Are they economical to run?

For low-volume use they usually are, because the standing losses of a small unit are far lower than heating and circulating water through long pipe runs from a central cylinder.

For high-volume hot water use, a central cylinder on a cheaper fuel remains the more economical arrangement.
