What is a remote fill point cabinet for?

It moves the delivery connection away from the tank to a position the tanker can reach — typically a boundary wall or driveway — so the driver never needs access to the tank itself.

That matters where the tank is behind a locked gate, in a rear garden, or too far from the road for a delivery hose to reach.

Does a remote fill point create an overfill risk?

It does, and this is the key point. When the driver cannot see the tank or its vent, there is no visual warning as the tank fills. An overfill alarm is strongly recommended and is treated as effectively necessary in most guidance.

Remote fill installations without an alarm are a recognised cause of oil pollution incidents.

Should the cabinet be lockable?

Yes. A lockable cabinet prevents contamination, tampering and theft from the fill point, and stops the connection being used by anyone other than your supplier.

Ensure the delivery driver has a means of access — a keysafe or a supplier-held key — or deliveries will be refused.

What should be inside the cabinet?

The fill connection with a cap, an isolation valve, the overfill alarm indicator or sounder, and ideally a drip tray to catch the small spill that occurs when the hose is disconnected.

A label showing the tank contents, capacity and location is worth adding, particularly on sites with more than one tank.

How far can a fill point be from the tank?

Distance is limited by the pump capability of the delivery tanker and the pipe run's friction losses. Longer runs need larger bore pipework and slow the delivery.

Discuss the intended run with your fuel supplier before installation — they know what their vehicles can achieve.

Does the fill line need protecting?

Yes. Buried fill lines should be in a duct or sleeve so they can be inspected and replaced without excavation, and protected against mechanical damage where they run under trafficked areas.

An undetected leak in a buried fill line discharges directly to ground during every delivery, which is why containment and inspection provision matters.
