Why choose an underground tank?

Underground installation frees the site of a visible tank, protects the contents from frost and temperature swings, and removes the fire separation distances that constrain above-ground siting. It is often the only option on small or overlooked plots.

The trade-off is installation cost and complexity, and the fact that inspection and eventual replacement are considerably harder.

What is involved in installing one?

Excavation to the required depth, a properly prepared and compacted base, correct backfill material, anchoring where groundwater is present, and a chamber giving access to the fittings and gauge.

This is not a DIY installation. Getting the backfill or anchoring wrong is the most common cause of tank failure and is unfixable without re-excavating.

Will an empty tank float?

It can, in ground with a high water table. An empty or part-full buried tank displaces water and can be pushed upward, damaging pipework and the surrounding ground.

Anchoring — typically a concrete base slab with strapping — prevents this and should be specified wherever groundwater is possible, not only where it is currently present.

How do I check the level and condition?

Via the access chamber, which houses the fill point, gauge and outlet fittings. Remote-reading and telemetry gauges are common on buried tanks precisely because physical inspection is inconvenient.

Leak detection is more important underground than above ground, since a slow loss will not be visible. Interstitial monitoring on twin-wall tanks is the usual approach.

Is 1,400 litres enough?

For a small property or supplementary heating, generally yes. For a full-time oil-heated family home it means several deliveries a year, and minimum delivery quantities may become a constraint.

Because underground installation is expensive and disruptive, it is usually worth installing the largest capacity the site will take rather than the smallest that meets current need.

Does it need bunding?

Underground tanks are normally twin-wall, which provides the secondary containment in the tank itself along with the ability to monitor the interstitial space for leaks.

Single-skin underground storage is not appropriate for oil in most circumstances — the environmental consequence of an undetected leak is severe.
